Description

Briza is an Canadian-American insurance technology startup making it easier for brokers and underwriters to generate quotes, and deliver small business insurance policies, in real time, over the internet.

We’re looking for full time Senior API Engineers to join us here in our Toronto office, or in a +/- 3 hrs time zone remotely.  As a senior backend API engineer at Briza with over 5 years relevant working experience, you will build and expand APIs and services and also work with our partners to launch new markets, and capabilities. This position will challenge and reward your creativity and vision!

We’re looking for people with a strong background in building successful products and systems. You’re comfortable in dealing with lots of moving pieces; you have exquisite attention to detail; and you’re comfortable learning new technologies and systems. We have a very experienced and well balanced founding team, and are looking for exceptional people to join our new venture.

Job Summary

  • Design, build, and maintain an API platform, services, and systems with fellow product designers and engineers as part of an agile team.

  • Debug production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack.

  • Work with engineers across the company to build new features.

  • Improve our engineering standards, tooling, and processes.

You may be fit for this role if you:

  • Have experience building battle-tested API platforms consumed by many developers

  • Have implemented APIs based on the REST architecture

  • Have worked with JSON, JSON-API, XML message formats

  • Have experience in object-oriented programming and can think in interfaces

  • Have worked with other APIs and third-party integrations

  • Can research, design and communicate your ideas in technical design and architecture discussions

  • Understand the OpenAPI specification

  • See the value and can create clear API documentation, good examples or tutorials

  • Have worked with authentication schemes (e.g. OAuth2, JWT)

  • Would enjoy working on systems to securely store sensitive data

  • See the value in writing automated tests (unit, integration) and always do so

  • Would enjoy working with our product team to build new tools

  • Hold yourself and others to a high bar when working with production systems, and take pride in working on projects to successful completion

  • Thrive in small collaborative teams and environments involving different stakeholders and subject matter experts

  • Have Startup, or Scaleup experience

  • Have worked professionally as a developer for 5+ years.

  • Node.js + TypeScript (ES6)

  • PostgreSQL (Amazon RDS)

  • Serverless built on AWS (Cloudformation, Cloudfront, API Gateway, Lambda)
