Employment Visas: The Big 3 E’s

1. Priority Workers – E1:

This visa is for those with established careers looking for a big change or career move. This is a permanent visa granted to those with special or highly qualified skills.

For those with:

  • Managerial and executive corporate positions


Professionals – E2:

This is for those who have done masters or secondary education and are looking for bigger career opportunities in the US after some experience. Your employer must fill out the petition for you.

This includes:

  • Those with advanced degrees with 5 years experience.
  • Significantly high degrees in science, arts, or business


Skilled, professional, and unskilled workers – E3:

This is likely the most common visa for those looking for work in the US. Your employer will petition for you on this one as well.

This is for:

  • Skilled workers: those with 2 years of work experience
  • Professionals: those who hold a B.A. or equivalent
  • Unskilled workers: capable of filling needed positions that aren’t seasonal.


For all E visas, here’s the process:

  1. Your employer will fill out the petition form.
  2. You will hear from the USCIS on when to fill out the DS-261 form
  3. Next, they will prompt you to pay the fees.
  4. Once these are paid, you will submit the documents outlined below.

Documents necessary:


Temporary Work Visas:

This visa is for someone who wants to try out career opportunities in the US for a fixed amount of time. You will need a sponsorship from a company to do so and should search for available sponsored positions ahead of time if you’re thinking about it. They are relatively easy and quick to get.

Here are a few of the temporary work visas available based on your skill area:

1. H-1B Visa: Special Occupation Visa

For those who:

  • Higher education degree or equivalent from your country
  • Be involved in government-to-government research.
  • Be involved in co-production projects with Department of Defense.


The process:

  1. You or your employer gets a Labor Certificate if required.
  2. Complete the online form.
  3. Upload official passport photo.
  4. If you are between the ages of 14-79 you will need to schedule an interview at a US embassy.
  5. Pay the $190 application fee.
  6. Bring all documents (outlined below) to your appointment.
  7. Wait to receive your passport. Track wait time here.

  • Passport
  • Visa Application Confirmation Page (What you get when you complete the online form)
  • Application fee receipt
  • Passport Photo
  • Receipt Number for your approved petition by employer

Average wait time: 2-6 months

Exchange Visas – J:

This is for those of you who want to spend some time in the US for further international work experience on your CV or to continue training in the US to develop your skills.

Here are the options for an exchange visa:

  • EduCare
  • Internships
  • Specialists
  • Research Scholars
  • Summer Work Travel
  • Trainee
  • Student

The best way is to get in touch with exchange programs, universities, technical schools, and companies looking for interns ahead of time and work out if they are able to get you sponsorship to apply for this visa. Sponsors are likely to be familiar with the process and their role in helping you with the documentation needed.

Once you have been accepted into a program or have an internship offer:

  • Fill out the Non-immigration Visa Form
  • Upload a passport photo
  • Schedule your interview date (usually between 2 and 15 days)
  • Pay the application fee
  • Get your documents together (outlined below)
  • Bring everything to your appointment and wait.

Let’s start with Tier 1: Entrepreneurs

This is for those who want to start a business in the UK. You can stay on this visa for a maximum of 3 years and 4 months. You can then apply to extend in a few different ways, but not beyond 5 years on this visa. You are able to use this visa to bring family with you. You cannot work for another company on this visa. This is a score based visa system, so you will need to qualify with points for these visas. Look at the specifics below.


  • Access to £50,000 in investment funds in a regulated institution
  • £1,300 to apply
  • Speak English
  • Be financially able to support yourself
  • Score 95 points – Here’s how
  • Be 16 or older

What it will cost and how long it will take:

  • 3 months, though you should get a decision in 3 weeks.
  • £1,300 to apply
  • A surcharge for health insurance (calculate it here).

The documents you need:

  • Passport
  • Show of funds
  • A complete business plan
  • Show of financial stability during stay
  • TB medical test
  • Proof of English competency
  • Criminal record of current country

Tier 1: Exceptional Talent:

This is if you’ve been recognized as a leader or emerging leader in science, humanities, engineering, medicine, digital technology, or the arts. You can bring family on this visa.

  1. . Apply to the Home Office for endorsement as a leader.
    • For this you will pay about £300
  1. Apply for the visa like a regular Tier 1 as mentioned above.
    • You will pay another £300

With this visa you can work for a company, for yourself, or do voluntary work. Once you get your endorsement letter, you will be able to submit this with you passport and a TB test and apply.

Tier 2 Visa: You’ve got a job!

This is the visa you can apply for is you’ve found sponsorship from a company that is a licensed sponsor in the UK, which can be very helpful. If you’re looking for a company to sponsor you for a positions, search here.  This visa will grant you up to 5 years. You are able to work for your company, do some side work, study, and bring family with you. It’s quite flexible for young professionals or those with dependants.

To qualify:

  • Have certificate of sponsorship from your new employers
  • Prove a legal salary (at least £30,000)
  • Know English
  • Have enough saved to support yourself when you arrive and get settled –  £945
  • Disclosure of travel history over 5 years.
  • Pass a TB test
  • Show criminal record from last 10 years.

The process for this visa takes about 8 weeks in general, 10 days if you qualify for priority, and same day if you use the premium service. Far faster than most visa processes!

How much you pay for your visa fee depends of if you are applying for:

You may extend your visa if you are still in the same job later on. You may need to re-qualify if you change jobs.

Tier 5 Youth Mobility Visa:

This is an awesome option for anyone fresh out of school from certain countries looking for a new adventure and international experience on their resume. A Tier 5 Youth Mobility visa allows you to work and live in the UK for up to 2 years. This is for anyone between the ages of 18-30. You will not, however, be able to sponsor children or family. Solo travelers only!

However, it is for a limited number of countries:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Japan
  • Monaco
  • New Zealand
  • Hong Kong
  • Republic of Korea
  • Taiwan

You must have:

  • £1,890 saved up to support yourself
  • Passport
  • A TB test

This visa will take 6 months, so plan ahead!

You cannot actually begin your job, however, you will need to secure your German work visa to start work. This visa does require education and experience, so this is best for a young professional ready for a bigger step in their career.

2. German Working Visa:

Congrats! You’ve found a job in Germany. If not, search for one here. You can apply for this visa while you’re already in Germany on a visiting or job seeker visa if you’re from the EU, the USA, Australia, Canada, South Korea, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland. If you’re from somewhere else, you must apply for a working visa with a job offer while in your home country to get permanent status.

Luckily, there’s actually 3 ways you can do this for different permits:

1. Be a general employee: This one is based on the needs of the government and you need official vocational qualification. You will need a solid job offer in a qualified field.

2. Be a specialist: This program is meant to attract highly qualified professionals to Germany. You need to be either a graduated specialist or someone with extensive experience in your field with a job offer above 86,000 euros per year. Professors with extensive careers also qualify.

3. Be Self-Employed: If you plan on doing your own thing, Germany welcomes you as long as you can prove business viability and an economic benefit to Germany. And handle your own capital. If you can, you have 3 years to make it work and your stay may be indefinitely extended based on your success.

3. Internship Visas:

If you can find an internship with a German company, you’re in! All you need to do is get letter confirmation and send in the following documentation. You will be granted residency for the duration of your internship and if you’re offered a full-time position, you may then apply for a work residency visa.

This will only take 3 weeks and cost about 60 euros!

How To Organize Your Income, Pack Up, And Move To A New Country

So last week, I quite literally did what people write about doing when an election doesn’t go their way or they remember a vacation on Instagram: I packed one bag and moved to a new country.

Yes, one bag. I quite literally got rid of everything I owned and started over. I used to have a full home, a whole closet, a car, electronics, etc. And now it’s all gone. It’s just me and exactly what I need in a whole new world.

I’m an American recent graduate with no corporate experience but I managed to secure an income and a visa that got me here to Barcelona, Spain.

It’s not nearly as difficult and daring as you think, trust me. Dropping everything is not just for the super wealthy or crazy anymore. There are so many opportunities online and abroad that require skills you already have.

You absolutely have the power to change your world and experience a different path from what you’ve been told to follow. Once you find the open door, pack up your bag and go!

Here’s exactly how I did it:

1. Choose your new world:

When it came to picking Barcelona to move to, it was based on more than just work. I made sure I was making a good lifestyle choice as well. Your experience can be so different in certain cities depending on if their culture fits your lifestyle desires. For me, I wanted temperate weather like I loved about California with a very social atmosphere and coastal location. Barcelona covered all this for me. Obviously, I could look up things like weather, location, amenities, etc. But finding out the social and cultural atmosphere of a city is a bit harder. 2. Scope the job market:

I’ve had friends move to cities without finding a job first, but I wouldn’t recommend this without a significant financial buffer for a good 8-10 months. I would search ahead of time and at least have interviews/second interviews lined up before you arrive. You never know how long the hiring process in some places may take before experiencing it yourself. I will say, I found my job in a startup and, as with anything with startups, it was really quick. Just a phone call. Before searching simplify your resume (or CV) to display your most diverse and transferable skills. 3. Determine what salary you need and how your skills stack up for negotiating:

It’s important to know how your lifestyle will change moving overseas. For instance, I knew some things in Spain cost me significantly less than in New York so the numbers didn’t shock or deter me. I was also able to negotiate because my skill set was in demand for many of the startups and there few like me over here. You may be able to “market” yourself better at certain companies. As always, many companies appreciate an international perspective, both abroad and back at home. Trust me, this move will only help to boost your qualification!

4. Find a new living space

There are very different living situations that are popular in cities across the world. For instance, it’s very uncommon for young people to live alone in Barcelona. And not just because of price, which can be affordable compared to many cities. I decided to move into a big flat with roommates around my same age and life stage so I would immediately have a social group to settle into my city with. Trust me, having a personal connection right off the bat helps immensely with building a new home away. But, to each their own!

You can either rent right away or there’s a little trick I suggest if you’d like to look around a bit before signing a lease: Airbnb Sublets. You can try an area for a month or two while you search for something more permanent! I did this and it was a great decision to figure out my perfect neighborhood.

5. Get involved

So now that you’ve got your job and living logistics sorted, time to create your new social network. This can be particularly difficult if you don’t speak the language but even then, I still managed to make lifelong friends in Spain and learn so much. Some great ways to get connected are Meetup, language classes, tech meetups, and networking events for your occupation. You’ll likely meet a big mix of people both local and doing exactly what you’re doing!

Those are my top tips for making the big move! I’m two weeks in and I have never been happier about a decision I’ve made. The hardest part is having the confidence to make the move.

Employer Sponsored Visas: If you already have a company willing to sponsor your entry to Australia, you have 2 different possibilities:

1. A temporary skilled shortage visa (up to 4 years):

This is a new system as of July 2017. You do not need a certain amount of work experience but you will need to fill an in demand skill. This is the option for those with work experience looking to start their careers somewhere new.

2. Employer nominated scheme:

For this, your job title must be one of the eligible occupations with at least 3 years work experience. You must be of a competent level of English. If you’re established in your career and seeking new, exciting opportunities, this is ideal. This is a permanent visa, so stability is not a concern.

If you’re doing it alone:

1. Skilled Independent Visa:

This is for the majority of those who want to make the move but haven’t investigated the job market or are looking to do their own thing. To get in on your own without company sponsorship, there is a mandatory called expression of interested called the SkillsSelect you must submit for review. You will then be invited to apply. Independent visas are points tested meaning you get points towards admission based on education, experience, financial standing, etc. Your skill set must be on the eligible skilled occupation list to apply.



2. Skilled- Nominated Visa:

The skill requirement for this visa are the same as a skilled independent visa but instead you are sponsored by a state or territory government. Different states and territories have skills for which they nominate for.



3. Skilled Regional Provisional Visa:

You can use this if you have a territory/state that will sponsor you based on skill set or have an eligible relative to sponsor you. This hold the same rules as the skilled regional sponsored visa: you can work where there is demand for your work in low population areas. For someone without work experience but with a family member to sponsor, this is the way in!

I can’t tell you how frustrated I used to get, running into an Instagram account for a “travel and lifestyle expert” who is preaching to “pack your bags and go” knowing fully well that they’re not supporting their own lifestyle like the rest of the world.
