United Kingdom - Tier 1 Visa Jobs
We are looking for a highly motivated Senior Software Developer to work at the EMBL-EBI located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. You will join the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) to work as part of the team to build the Data Coordination Platform (DCP) for the Human Cell Atlas (HCA).
We will work as part of the HCA project to define comprehensive reference maps of all human cells using single cell gene expression techniques as the basis for both understanding human health and understanding different disease mechanisms. For more information about the HCA project click here.
We will deliver simple, open and direct access to all HCA data across many cloud based systems and as part of this team you will have great opportunities to engage with the data generators, project users and our collaborators from the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), the Broad Institute and the funders the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) to build the DCP.
The overall aim of this role is to deliver the data ingest and presentation infrastructure required for the HCA. The ingest pipelines are expected to be capable of processing many PetaBytes of raw sequencing data and associated metadata, and are required to operate on local compute clusters and remote cloud environments. The key aspects include validation, transformation, and presentation of data to downstream cloud partners in the HCA Data Coordination Platform. You will work closely with the ENA group and HCA Data Coordination Platform. The ENA operates one of the world's largest scientific databases and our environment provides an exciting opportunity for you to work with extremely large databases and complex high-intensity distributed processing applications.
You should have a university degree in computer science or software engineering and have several years of experience building distributed data processing applications in Java. You should have significant previous software development experience and knowledge of Java, a deep understanding of workflow and distributed data processing software, relational database schema design and implementation, be self-motivated and capable of working both independently and as part of a team, and display a willingness to learn new skills as the project requires. The role will require significant interaction with other groups both within EMBL-EBI, and with external partners in the HCA Data Coordination Platform. Therefore excellent communication, interpersonal and English language skills are essential.
Desirable skills and experience include prior experience in building REST web services using Java, NoSQL database design and implementation, exposure to the Spring framework, proficiency with relational databases, proficiency with MongoDB, and prior experience working in a multidisciplinary scientific environment.
At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of ‘big data’ in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 21 member states and two associate member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world.
