Are you looking for a challenging role in web application development? The Protein Function development team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is looking for an experienced and motivated React/TypeScript developer to contribute to the development of the web application of one of the most prominent services in the field of biology, the Universal Protein Resource (UniProt).

The Protein Function Development team is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. The Protein Function development team maintains bioinformatics infrastructure of the world leading Universal Protein Resource (UniProt), Gene Ontology Annotation and Enzyme resource.

This is a very dynamic and interdisciplinary team comprising talented and enthusiastic software engineers and bioinformaticians working closely together with the biocurators in these resources. The UniProt resource is one of the most internationally used protein databases serving a large and diverse research community in genomics, proteins and proteomics. You will be working on the UniProt Interfaces project.

Your role

The duties of the position include:

  • Taking on a development role, using JavaScript and TypeScript to develop applications with the React library as well as natively (Web Components)
  • Working closely with UX designers and other developers to provide a cutting-edge web application for the leading resource on protein information, supporting hundreds of thousands of users in academia and industry worldwide
  • Supporting high-quality engineering in web production software as well as the delivery of rapid prototypes that explore new ideas for a new project
  • Collaborating closely with a highly dynamic group of software engineers, bioinformaticians and scientists in the team, across EMBL-EBI, and with our Consortium partners internationally
  • Working in a team-orientated environment

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with excellent communication skills, who collaborate effectively with other team members, who are a team player, and who will be able to interact with fellow technical experts as well as scientists seeking solutions to their "real world" problems. They should also have a good understanding of browser rendering behaviour and performance, and relish working on projects with complex requirements and be able to solve problems creatively and effectively.  

You have

You will have a postgraduate degree in Computer Science or a related discipline with at least 2 years proven professional experience in development using JavaScript/TypeScript.

You will be experienced in web development with expert JavaScript competences, both with native JavaScript (ES2016 and above) and with React and its latest features. You should have an excellent knowledge of HTML5 and CSS3 and experience of building cross-platform, responsive websites.

You will be familiar with the latest build tools such as Webpack, and with popular javascript testing frameworks (Jest, Enzyme,...) and TDD.

You will be experienced handling JSON data from RESTful services, and you’ll have demonstrable experience of working on data-driven websites with high user traffic.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with Agile methodologies, development best practices and have experience of using source control systems, such as Git.  

You might also have

Experience working in bioinformatics, biological resource development and/or technical experience within scientific publishing or information science would be an advantage.
